This position is located in the Policies for Sustainable Development Unit, Division of Sustainable Development and Human Settlements Division. The Economic Affairs Officer reports to the Chief of the Unit.

**Responsibilities**:
Under the overall supervision of the Chief of the Unit, the Economic Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
Economic or sector analysis
- Develops, collects, interprets, and analyses specified statistics, qualitative socioeconomic and environmental information. Maintains databases and programmes for database management and organise non-qualitative information on sustainable development issues and trends.






- Drafts specified inputs for technical papers and analytical studies on selected global, regional, national or sector aspects of environmental development policies.
- Identifies and analyses policy proposals relating to assigned topics.
- Attends international, regional, and national meetings to collect information and hold discussions with colleagues in other institutions.
- Assist in organising and servicing seminars on sustainable development, environmental democracy, and others as needed.

Intergovernmental support
- Supports planning, organising, and servicing intergovernmental meetings, including subsidiary bodies.
- Prepares inputs for reports to intergovernmental bodies.
- Follows intergovernmental meetings and prepares summary reports.
- Prepares inputs to statements by members of the Bureau and Secretariat staff to such meetings.
- Assists in organising panels, round tables etc. on development issues for intergovernmental processes.

Technical cooperation
- Participates in missions on development issues, usually as a team member.






- Prepare documentation for technical cooperation programmes and projects.
- Contributes to preparing material for the approval of regional, country or sector technical cooperation projects.
- Monitors, backstops and assesses the implementation of technical cooperation programmes and projects

General
- Performs other related duties as required, including various administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work Division's services.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in economics or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Job - Specific Qualification
Specialisation studies in environment and development are required.

Work Experience

Working experience in environmental economics desirable.

Experience in managing statistics packages is highly desirable.

Working experience in an international organisation desirable.

Experience in organising and servicing intergovernmental or academic meetings is highly desirable.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in Spanish and English is required. Working knowledge of French or Portuguese is desirable.

NOTE: "Fluency" equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand)





and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.
