Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

**Main purpose of job**:
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) promotes the United Kingdom’s interests overseas, supporting UK citizens and businesses around the globe. The British Embassy in Santiago leads on diplomatic relations with Chile. This role is based within the Prosperity Team in Chile, the team that covers Climate Change, Trade Policy, Economic Diplomacy and Science and Innovation within the Embassy.

This position will support all policy actions related to climate change at the British Embassy Santiago. The jobholder will contribute on the implementation of the Embassy´s Climate Change agenda,





by strengthening climate change collaboration between the UK and Chile, responding to COP26 follow-up work, supporting longer-term climate change objectives, and supporting specific climate campaigns (i.e. Race to Zero).

Key areas of work include Clean Growth, Climate Ambition, Adaptation, Green Hydrogen, Green Finance, among others. Key activities will include supporting on the delivery of public diplomacy events, supporting lobbying efforts, contact-building among relevant stakeholders, coordinating and implementing visits and agenda of relevant authorities and stakeholders, and social media profiling of the Embassy’s climate work.

**Roles and responsibilities**:

- To support the Head of Climate Change and the Prosperity team with activities related to the implementation of the Climate Change agenda, including leading on specific Climate Change related areas or projects.
- To implement the UK’s COP26 follow-up work, by monitoring Chile´s progress on COP26 declarations and commitments,





and by engaging Chile on not yet endorsed declarations (i.e. Green Grids Initiative, Breakthrough agenda).
- To engage and support ongoing collaboration initiatives between the UK and with Chile´s public sector authorities (Ministries of Energy, Environment, Agriculture, Transport, Finance, Health) working on Chile´s climate agenda (e.g. Nationally Determined Contribution and decarbonisation planning and implementation, clean growth, energy transition, green finance, resilience & adaptation, etc). To liaise with officials in Chilean Government on policy and operational elements of the Embassy´s climate action agenda.
- To support the implementation of project activities and strategy work for the FCDO on Critical Minerals, especially lithium,





collaborating closely with colleagues in Bolivia and Argentina and in the Department for International Trade and BEIS.
- To lead the Race to Zero campaign implementation in Chile, by liaising and engaging with private sector, non-state and subnational actors, to promote the Race to Zero campaign, organize events around the campaign. To support and promote existing Race to Zero members and aim to get new organisations, especially regions, to sign up to the campaign.
- To prepare and plan for visits, events and meetings, e.g. preparing briefings for the Ambassador or senior visitors, organising events and activities realted to climate change. Reporting on relevant policy developments on climate change and energy issues.
- To assist engagement with non-Government actors,





through stakeholder mapping and building working level contacts in sub-national authorities (cities, regions), representatives of businesses, and civil society.
- To promote the UK’s climate change related strategies, policy experience, technology and capabilities to key Chilean public, private, academic and civil society stakeholders; collaborate with Head of Climate Change and Department of International Trade (DIT) to generate and identify UK business opportunities in Chile (Low Carbon, Green Hydrogen, Green Finance, Health, Water security).
- To work with the Ministry of Health on the implementation of Chile’s COP26 commitment for sustainable low-carbon health systems, including through membership of the ATACH alliance.

Approximately £25,000 (Non-ODA) funding for project activities.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

**Essential on arrival**:

- Bachelor´s Degree (or higher) in a relevant field, for instance, Environmental Science, Public Policy, Public Administration, International Relations, etc.
- A minimum of 2+ years of experience working for an organization in a relevant field, for example, working for/with national or regional government, international organizations or agencias, academic institutions, preferably in climate change.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must have the legal status to live and work in Chile.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

**Desirable**:







- Previous experience working/interacting with Chilean or UK Government stakeholders, or Chilean or UK private sector actors on climate policy.
- Knowledge or experience of project management and relevant skills.
